Mussenden Temple

Mussenden Temple is perched high on a cliff top, on a blustery headland, on the North Londonderry Coast. A striking landmark; it is part of the picturesque surroundings of Downhill Demesne.

It was originally built as a library by Frederick Hervey, Earl Bishop of Derry. He lived in the mansion on the Demesne, which is now an 18th century ruin. The temple was dedicated to Frederick’s cousin, Mrs Mussenden.

Downhill Demesne was chosen by the late Earl Bishop to build a country house. Its location provides wide, sweeping, views over the North Londonderry Coast and Donegal. There are also peaceful gardens in the Demesne at the Bishops Gate, where you can relax and enjoy the stunning scenery and serenity. As Downhill Demesne is now available for weddings, you can have beautiful photographs taken here.
